Smera Doshi Senior Project 19-20

We had our first PDC meeting last Tuesday, November 19th at lunch, where we did group introductions. In order to help everyone step out of their comfort zone and meet new people, we formed an accountability buddy system, where soft-spoken members in the group were paired with louder members in the group, allowing them to hold each other accountable and have a peer to peer mentor system. We had a skills survey, where every group member suggested 1-2 skills they wanted to focus on, and we sent out a Google form, where each member voted on the top 3 skills they wanted to learn this year through PDC. We will be having activities related to the top 3 skills at each PDC meeting, helping them by slowly building their confidence and professional skills. We also challenged the group members, giving them the task to help me draft the fall edition of the Homestead Horizon, our Homestead FBLA newsletter. I have been a part of FBLA ever since the beginning of high school, and I have developed a passion for mentoring the people in it, as I would never have been able to gain the opportunities I have had if it were not for the older officers that had mentored me in the past. I decided to bring back a committee we had my freshman year called Professional Development Committee. The goal of this committee is to help members develop professional skills along with their confidence in public speaking and their self-confidence. We held PDC interviews this past week and have finalized our committee. Our first meeting is tomorrow, and I look forward to mentoring the freshman in our committee. We selected the 8 people in our committee carefully, as we wanted to pick some people that are extremely soft-spoken and do not have a speaking competition in FBLA, therefore allowing them to find another channel to develop their confidence.
